Why do we use them? In which cases are they recommended?
The dental crowns are used to change the color and/or shape of existing teeth as well as to strengthen them in case of denervated teeth or teeth with a previous fracture.
Ceramic crowns can be used on any tooth but are almost imperative on the front teeth. The lack of metal offers us flexibility which leads to a perfect result aesthetically, imitating the natural tooth!
Some of the most common cases where the use of a porcelain case is recommended, when:
– Much of the tooth has been lost due to injury
– Due to very advanced caries, a large part of the tooth has been lost
– After denervation of a tooth, to protect it
– We want to replace large, old seals
– We want the aesthetic improvement of the tooth
– There is a need for implant coverage
– We want to protect a cracked tooth
– It is necessary for the construction of a dental bridge
All-Ceramic VS Metal-Ceramic Cases
Alternatively to all-ceramic crowns, we can use the classic metal-ceramic which has a metal core and porcelain coating. However, they do not offer an advantage over all-ceramics except for the lower cost.
In contrast, all-ceramics are more resistant to crushing, which makes them stronger. Also, they are more organism friendly (biocompatible). In many cases it is observed that the gums embrace them like natural teeth.
All-ceramic crown materials
The materials that are available are enough and are determined according to the respective indications. The best known are Zirconium (or zirconium oxide, Zirconia) which are of unparalleled strength as well as lithium disilicate (better known as Ivoclar Vivadent as e-max) for its top aesthetics.
Care
Teeth with all-ceramic cases remain teeth, so they need the same care. Brushing twice a day and flossing in between or with interdental brushes.
